Gather Your Materials

You'll need: baking soda, vinegar, dish soap, food coloring, a plastic bottle, and clay or paper-mache to build your volcano shape.

Build Your Volcano

Shape clay or paper-mache around the plastic bottle to form a mountain. Leave the bottle opening at the top. Let it dry completely and paint it brown and gray!

Mix the Secret Formula

Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda into the bottle. Squeeze in some dish soap and a few drops of red and orange food coloring.

ERUPTION TIME!

Pour vinegar into the bottle and step back! The acid-base reaction creates carbon dioxide gas, producing a fizzy, foamy "lava" eruption!

Always do experiments with a grown-up nearby! Vinegar can sting your eyes, so wear your safety goggles. And do this one outside or on a tray -- it gets messy (that's the fun part!).
