Arts and Crafts Design Reference

The Arts and Crafts movement was an international trend in the decorative and fine arts that began in Britain and flourished between approximately 1880 and 1920. The movement emphasized simplicity of form, truth to materials, dignity of labor, and sought to break down the artificial hierarchy between the fine arts and the decorative arts. It is fundamentally anti-industrial, celebrating handcrafted quality over mechanical perfection, and advocating for the unity of art and life.

Warm accents Ochre yellow, mustard, amber, tawny gold

Uncial Antiqua Uncial / medieval display Decorative headings, drop caps
MedievalSharp Medieval-inspired display Feature titles, ornamental
Merriweather Sturdy readable serif Body copy, long text
Sorts Mill Goudy Arts and Crafts-era revival All-purpose serif
Cardo Scholarly old-style serif Body text, captions

Iconic Design Examples

These specific William Morris designs exemplify the aesthetic and serve as visual reference:

Newcomb Pottery

Hand-crafted ceramic vases with carved botanical motifs in muted blues, greens, and natural clay tones. Designs feature moss-draped live oaks, magnolias, and other Southern flora.

Aesthetic Relationship to Arts and Crafts
Art Nouveau Successor; shares organic/natural focus but with more flowing, whiplash curves and less medieval influence
Gothic Revival Predecessor; Arts and Crafts inherits medieval forms, pointed arches, and devotion to handcraft
Pre-Raphaelite Predecessor; shared members (Morris, Burne-Jones) and devotion to medieval beauty and nature
Bauhaus Descendant in spirit; shares craft-centered philosophy but with modernist geometry
Prairie School American parallel; Frank Lloyd Wright’s integration of natural forms with architecture
